How to migrate from Tally to Zoho Books

Quick answer

To migrate from Tally to Zoho Books, close and reconcile a period in Tally, redesign the chart of accounts rather than copying Tally's groups, export ledgers, parties, stock items and bill-wise outstandings from Tally, map them to Zoho accounts, contacts, items and warehouses, load them with the opening trial balance at cut-off, and reconcile the trial balance, receivables, payables and stock back to Tally before anyone starts transacting in Zoho.

Most Indian businesses that move to Zoho are moving from Tally. Still deciding? Read Tally vs Zoho Books first. It is the migration we run most often. Tally and Zoho organise data differently, so the migration works best as a short redesign, not a straight copy.

Common problems in Tally data

  • Duplicate parties, the same customer created twice under slightly different names.
  • Old unadjusted bill-wise entries, advances and on-account receipts never matched to invoices.
  • Suspense and adjustment ledgers with balances nobody can explain.
  • Stock that does not match the books, from negative stock or items issued without entries.
  • GST details missing or wrong on party ledgers.

Fix these in Tally before the cut-off, or they come across into Zoho.

Reconciliation before go-live

  • Zoho trial balance equals the Tally trial balance at cut-off.
  • Customer-wise and vendor-wise ageing match Tally’s bill-wise outstandings.
  • Stock by item and warehouse matches Tally’s stock summary in quantity and value.
  • Bank balances match bank statements.
  • GST and TDS balances are carried forward correctly.

We run Tally migrations as part of our data migration service and every Zoho Books and Zoho ERP implementation. For the general method, see how to migrate to Zoho Books.

Frequently asked questions

Can we move our full Tally history to Zoho?
It is possible but rarely worth it. Migrate masters, open items and balances at a cut-off date, and keep Tally, or an export of it, for past years' reports and audits.
What is the best time to move from Tally to Zoho?
The start of a financial year is cleanest, because the books are closed, audited or reviewed, and GST returns are filed. A quarter or month end also works if the period is fully closed and reconciled.
Should we move to Zoho Books or Zoho ERP?
Traders and service businesses usually move to Zoho Books, with Zoho Inventory if they hold stock. Indian mid-market manufacturers and distributors with production, several warehouses or a purchasing team should look at Zoho ERP. Our comparison guide explains the difference.
How long does a Tally to Zoho Books migration take?
For a single company with clean data, the migration fits within a Zoho Books launch of about a week per app. Several companies, many godowns or years of uncleared bill-wise entries add time for cleaning and reconciliation.
